Stand out from the rest with unique views

Boost your PR by sharing new ideas

Jason Mudd talks about why going against the crowd can help your company grow. You’ve started your own business. Things are going smoothly, but you’re not growing at the rate you want. What should you do?

If your company’s growth isn’t what you want, you should examine your views on the industry you’re working in. Are you ignoring trends, following them, or are you breaking out of the mold to set your own? If you want your company to really grow, you need to develop unique viewpoints regarding your industry that are different from everyone else’s.

It’s important that you not just have different views; you also need to share your views through public relations. If you have a contrarian view on something in your industry, don’t keep it to yourself, share it! Got a view that will probably be seen as provocative? Good! Tell the world about it. Is one of your products influenced by unorthodox thinking? Spread the backstory behind it! It does you no good if nobody knows about what makes you unique.

Sharing unorthodox to outright controversial views can boost your public relations efforts. People, including clients and customers, tend to be attracted to companies that have unique views, ideas, and products over those that copy the same things everyone else is doing. Voicing views that stand out from others is a great way to attract attention to your company and what you do.

Having a unique viewpoint is also vital if you want to become a thought-leader in an industry. Think about it: If you and your company are spouting the same things as the rest of the people in the industry, how can anyone take you seriously as a thought-leader? There’s no leading there; just following. By talking about something different, you’ll stand out and show that your company is interesting in terms of how you view yourself and your industry.

What’s different about you isn’t just limited to how you view your industry. It can also be your

  • products,
  • company culture, and
  • stances on hot issues.

So explore your company, find out what makes it stand out, and be willing to share that with the rest of the world.

If your company isn’t growing the way you want, it might be because you’re not differentiating yourself enough. Sharing different, controversial, or provocative views on your industry via PR can help get people interested in your company and fast-track your rise to industry leader status. If you find that your company is starting to stagnate, consider being open about the more unorthodox views your company has.
