Dust off old and unused ideas when designing PR plans

By Jacob McKimm

An idea that didn’t fit one campaign can be just right for another

Jason Mudd talks about the value of keeping notes when ideating for PR, even if they go unused. When ideating for public relations, you and the people you’re doing PR with will develop plenty of ideas for a campaign. However, you won’t find a use for all of them. Throwing them into a folder or archive doesn’t mean it’s the end for those ideas, though.

If you’re having trouble thinking of new ideas for your public relations plan, look back at previous ideas you created but didn’t use. Ideas and plans that didn’t make the final cut for a previous PR plan can be just what your PR team needs to solve current PR challenges.

Giving life to old ideas doesn’t have to apply just to overall PR plans. You can apply this to smaller ideas and elements as well. Some ideas include:

  • Taking a cut idea for a social media post, tweaking it to fit your current plan, and using it
  • Grabbing an infographic that wasn’t approved because it didn’t fit an old plan and integrating it into an upcoming campaign
  • Using media contacts you didn’t use for one campaign for another

Ideas that didn’t make the cut for one PR plan can be a perfect fit for another plan. Some ideas made during an ideation session may be just what you need for an upcoming campaign to succeed. If you’re not keeping a thorough record of unused ideas, start doing so now; you never know when they could come in handy in the future.
